Immerse yourself in the natural beauty and culture of Kumarakom with this extended 5-hour kayaking tour, starting from the peaceful canals of Cheepunkal Village. This route winds through the narrow shaded waterways of Kumarakom, opens out into the Vembanad Lake, and includes a return via Kavanattinkara, creating a beautiful loop through Kerala’s iconic backwater landscape.
The paddle offers a tranquil journey through rich ecosystems and village life. You’ll paddle through tranquil patches of blooming water lilies, coconut groves, Rice and Vegetable Farms, and see local activities like duck farming and toddy tapping unfold along the way. Kumarakom’s backwaters are home to incredible birdlife—expect to see kingfishers, egrets, darters, cormorants, and even migratory storks near the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Early morning tours are especially rewarding for bird enthusiasts.
Midway through the paddle, we pause near a quiet canal bank for a paddling break, during which you’ll enjoy a short village walk along shaded lanes that trace the canals. It’s a rare chance to step onto land and witness village homes, local farming practices, and everyday life in one of Kerala’s most beautiful rural regions.
You’ll then paddle out into the wide expanse of Vembanad Lake, where the stillness of the water and open horizon make for a perfect conclusion to your adventure. The loop brings you back to your starting point at Cheepunkal, refreshed and inspired.
After the paddling, a traditional Kerala lunch will be served—featuring freshly cooked fish, seasonal vegetables, and local rice, prepared with the simplicity and warmth of home-style cooking. A vegetarian alternative is available on request.
Note on Water Hyacinth:
Kumarakom’s canals are occasionally affected by floating water hyacinth, especially during certain seasons. When encountered, we may adjust the route, paddle back the same way, or briefly carry the kayak over small sections. Please treat this as part of the natural adventure—we recommend this tour for those with a sporty spirit and flexibility.
