Discover the soul of Kerala’s backwaters with a serene kayaking tour through Nedumudy, a peaceful village nestled in the lush heart of Alleppey. Beginning at the Emerald Isle Heritage Resort, this three-hour paddle immerses you in a quieter, more authentic slice of Kuttanad—far from the crowds, yet rich in natural beauty and cultural depth.

As you glide through narrow, shaded canals flanked by swaying coconut palms and paddy fields below sea level, you’ll see a way of life that flows with the water. Villagers move about in dugout canoes, women wash clothes by the banks, and fishermen cast their nets the same way their ancestors did. One of the unique features of this region is duck farming—you’ll likely see large flocks being herded along the water, a charming and essential part of the local economy.

Along the route, you’ll pass by centuries-old temples, often set in peaceful courtyards under banyan trees, as well as quaint churches reflecting the multicultural heritage of Kerala’s backwater communities. These spiritual landmarks add a quiet grace to the journey and offer insight into the harmonious blend of traditions here.

The flora is lush and varied—banana groves, water lilies, and floating hyacinths thrive alongside cultivated coconut palms. The canals also support a vibrant bird population, with kingfishers, egrets, cormorants, and brahminy kites often seen skimming the water or perched along the banks.

Your local guide, well-versed in the ecology and life of these waterways, will share stories and point out subtle features that make the backwaters so special—from medicinal plants to seasonal agricultural practices. This tour not only explores the region’s natural beauty but also connects you to the rhythms of its culture and economy.
